Navy Volunteers create “Furniture Store”
November 7, 2014
On Friday, November 7th, 10 volunteers from Naval Station Great Lakes volunteered their time at South Elementary School, in North Chicago, to support the District Operations, Grounds and Maintenance team and North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) in the creation of a district-wide “Furniture Store.”
Over the summer of 2014, NCCP managed the reorganization and consolidation of North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 (CUSD 187) alongside district leadership. Throughout this process, South and Greenbay Elementary Schools were closed and Forrestal, North, A.J. Katzenmaier and Yeager Elementary Schools were reconfigured into four Grade Level Centers, two serving students K-2 and two serving students 3-5, respectively.
During the reorganization, over 250 truckloads of obsolete and broken furniture were removed from our buildings and the remaining furniture was either redistributed into classrooms throughout the district, or taken to South for storage and future use. It has been the district’s vision, since the consolidation, to create a “Furniture Store” at South, where extra items could be organized, by type, for easy inventorying by the district and access when school staff needed items replaced in their rooms.
Volunteers from Naval Station Great Lakes made this vision a reality. The 10 volunteers worked alongside NCCP and the District’s Operations, Grounds and Maintenance team to sort through all excess furniture at South and organize the items into designated classrooms, as well as separate out any remaining broken and obsolete items to be discarded. Items were rearranged, by room, in the following categories:
- Adult Chairs
- Student Chairs
- File Cabinets and Storage Units
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers from Naval Station Great Lakes, for their time and effort to complete a project in one afternoon, which would have taken NCCP and the district team months to complete!
