Discover CB Read With Me
Yeager Elementary School
On Wednesday, November 19, following the October launch of Discover CB’s commitment to student literacy support in North Chicago, nine volunteers from Discover CB came to Yeager Elementary to kick-off the Read With Me Program. On a monthly basis, volunteers from Discover will return to Yeager to read and engage with the third grade classes and create an opportunity for students to get excited about literacy and thinking about every-day stories in a new and creative way. Each third grade class at Yeager will have the opportunity to participate in this program twice throughout the school year and will receive a copy of the book they read to take home at the end of the day.
The stories below have been identified for the 2014-2015 academic year and will be accompanied by educationally-based, enrichment and craft activities.
- The True Story of the Three Little Pigs
- The Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice
- Gotta Go! Gotta Go!
- Interrupting Chicken
- Snowflake Bentley
- Aliens in Underpants Save the World
- What do you Do with a Tail Like This?
- Come On, Rain!
- How to Clean a Hippopotamus: A Look at Unusual Animal Partnerships
During session one, volunteers spent the morning with Ms. Mason’s class and started off with small group readings of “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs.” Following the reading, volunteers and students discussed the concepts of perspective and point of view and culminated their time together by creating a craft-pig of their own, using paper, clothing pins, googley-eyes and pipe cleaners.
