ACCO School Supply Donation
Student Backpacks and Supplies for Students at Forrestal
August 22, 2014

On Friday August 22nd, twelve volunteers representing ACCO and two from the Kids in Need Foundation distributed 424 backpacks filled with school supplies to every child at Forrestal Elementary School. Each backpack contained new folders, a spiral notebook, pencils, erasers, scissors and more. During the time spent at Forrestal, volunteers had an opportunity to visit each of the school’s 23 classrooms, bringing countless smiles to children and teachers’ faces. The collaboration between North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP), ACCO, and Kids in Need Foundation began in the spring of 2014 when representatives expressed interest in making a large school supply donation to Forrestal Elementary School. This connection was made possible through a local community church member who had served at Forrestal in other capacities alongside NCCP.

North Chicago Community Partners has had the privilege of working in North Chicago since 2008, providing programs and support that complement classroom instruction, enhance student learning, strengthen school climate, and actively engages parents and community volunteers while addressing the needs of the whole child. Forrestal Elementary currently serves Pre-kindergarten through second grade students, most of which are low income families. Previous statistics indicated that 7 out 10 children attending the school did not have adequate school supplies needed to succeed. Through this very generous donation, children at Forrestal are now prepared to thrive and teachers are equipped to teach.

This donation was appreciated by the entire Forrestal School community, including the Principal, Ms. Brooks, who personally expressed her gratitude towards all of those in attendance for so generously volunteering their time and services to help meet the needs of all students and families. Due to the large military population, Forrestal Elementary school has a higher than average transition rate. In all, ACCO donated 500 filled backpacks, which means all students transitioning into the school throughout the coming year will also receive one as a welcome gift on their first day of school!

NCCP is so excited to begin this new partnership and to work together to provide enriching opportunities to the students and families in North Chicago. Thank you to all who attended!
